Hairstyles for a Square-Shaped Face

To determine if you have a square face, pull all of your hair back in a ponytail. Go to your bathroom mirror. With a marker (dry erase marker or even a tube of lipstick or Chapstick), draw the outline of your face on the mirror. If your forehead is square and your jaw line is square, you have a square shaped face.

Selecting a hair style for this face shape can be rather tricky. You don’t want to make your face look even more square than it actually is. You can wear short or long styles as long a they don’t end right at your jaw line.

Make sure that you have bangs. They will soften your square forehead.  Make sure they are wispy. You don’t want the little Dutch-girl style with bangs cut straight across your face.

Have your stylist add texture to your hair style. Having a style that is wavy or curly adds softness to your angular features. Consider getting a permanent or a body wave.

Do not part your hair in the center because it will emphasize the shape of your face too much. Sweep your wispy bangs to one side. Choose a style that creates height at the crown of your head. This will add visual length to your face.

If you like short hair, a layered bob above the jaw line works nicely. Short spiky cuts add height to your style (and a flair of pizazz). For longer styles, make sure your length goes below your jaw line.  Layers are nice for long hair because they add curls and waves to disguise your square face.

Make sure that you avoid one-length straight hair styles. Stay away from chin length styles. And, don’t have a blunt cut.
